DEA is used as a surfactant and a corrosion inhibitor. It is used to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from natural gas. In oil refineries, a DEA in water solution is commonly used to remove hydrogen sulfide from sour gas. It has an advantage over a similar amine, ethanolamine, in that a higher concentration may be used for the same corrosion potential. Ethanolamine is commonly called monoethanolamine or MEA in order to be distinguished from

diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA).


Triethylamine is commonly employed in organic synthesis as a base. It is commonly used as a base during the preparation of esters and amides from acyl chlorides. Triethylamine is mainly used in the production of quaternary ammonium compounds for textile auxiliaries  and quaternary ammonium salts of dyes.

It is also a catalyst and acid neutralizer for condensation reactions and is useful as an intermediate for manufacturing medicines, pesticides and other chemicals.
