Solvent : Isopropyl alcohol dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds, it is used widely as a solvent and as a cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving oils.

Medical: Rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting pads typically contain a 60–70% solution of isopropyl alcohol or ethanol in water. Water is required to open up membrane pores of bacteria, which acts as  a gateway for isopropyl alcohol Intermediate: Isopropyl alcohol is esterified to give isopropyl acetate, another solvent; Isopropyl alcohol reacts  with titanium tetrachloride and aluminium metal to give titanium and aluminium isopropoxides.

Automotive: Isopropyl alcohol is a major ingredient in „gas dryer” fuel additives etc

Laboratory: As a biological specimen preservative, isopropyl alcohol provides a comparatively non-toxic alternative to formaldehyde and other synthetic preservatives. Isopropyl alcohol is often used in DNA extraction, etc.


A variety of technical and industrial applications: feedstock in the manufacture of isobutyl acetate, precursor of derivative esters,  paint solvent, varnish remover, gasoline additive, to reduce carburetor icing, automotive  polish additive, chemical extractant in production of organic compounds.

Second-generation biofuel: Isobutanol can be used as a biofuel substitute for gasoline in the current petroleum infrastructure, with several qualities that resolve issues by ethanol.


Industrial use: is an intermediate in the production of butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate,  and other butyl esters;  is used as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical and textile processes, in organic synthesis, and as a chemical intermediate;  is used in the synthesis of 2-butoxyethanol; is also used as a base for perfumes; etc.
